A powerful display of unity and protest took center stage in Bilbao, Spain, on a historic Saturday in November 2025. 50,000 spectators witnessed a friendly football match with a political punch, as Palestinian players faced off against a team from Spain's Basque Country. But here's where it gets controversial...
The match, organized to protest Israel's military actions in Gaza, attracted a massive crowd at San Mames Stadium. Organizers reported a sold-out event, with fans passionately waving Palestinian and Basque flags. Several thousand protesters marched with flags before the game, adding to the electric atmosphere.
Spain has been a hotbed of protests against Israel's response to the 2023 Hamas attack. Bilbao, in particular, has become a symbol of resistance, hosting the first of many large demonstrations against an Israeli-owned cycling team during the Spanish Vuelta in September.
The Basque team featured players from renowned clubs like Athletic and Real Sociedad, as well as other professional sides. Interestingly, none of Spain's national team players were available, as they were busy with World Cup qualifier duties.
And this is the part most people miss: the Palestinian team's journey doesn't end in Bilbao. They will continue their tour of Spain, facing another selection of players from Catalonia in Barcelona on Tuesday.
So, what do you think? Is sports an effective platform for political protest? Or should it remain separate from such controversies? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
