Measles is making a comeback in the U.S., and it's spreading faster than ever. Dr. Chase Shutak, a pediatrician in Minneapolis, said the recent surge in Texas—where 762 cases were confirmed, including two deadly outcomes—has raised alarms. 'We’ve been worried about this all year,' he said. 'When outbreaks began in Texas, we knew they’d eventually reach our state.' In Minnesota, one child has been hospitalized at Children’s Minnesota, according to a spokesperson. Most cases trace back to families who traveled within the U.S., with none having received the MMR vaccine. However, it’s unclear if the children are old enough to qualify for the shots, which are typically administered in two doses starting around age 1.
Meanwhile, Arizona and Utah are grappling with their own outbreaks. Arizona has confirmed 59 cases, mostly in Mohave County, which borders Utah. David Heaton of the Southwest Utah Public Health Department noted, 'We’re actually part of Northern Arizona’s outbreak.' Utah has seen 44 cases, many among unvaccinated youth. Five patients were hospitalized but have since recovered.
The CDC reports a total of 1,544 confirmed cases nationwide this week, with only 21 linked to international travelers.
