In a powerful display of political ambition, Nathan Nandala Mafabi, the Forum for Democratic Change's (FDC) presidential candidate, has vowed to bring about significant changes in the Teso region. But can he deliver on these promises?
During a rousing rally in Soroti City, Mafabi captivated thousands of supporters with his vision for the region's future. He promised to breathe life back into Teso's cooperative unions, which he believes are the key to economic growth and community empowerment. And this is where it gets controversial: he accused the current government of actively undermining these cooperatives, dismantling the very structures that once fostered prosperity.
Mafabi's plan includes a comprehensive strategy to boost agriculture, infrastructure, and youth opportunities. He aims to revive the glory days of Teso, recalling its prosperous cattle herds and fertile farmlands. A bold promise: he committed to compensating families affected by the cattle raids of the 1980s and 1990s within two years, a move that could bring closure to a painful chapter in the region's history.
The candidate also proposed a series of infrastructure projects to enhance trade and connectivity, such as road rehabilitation in Soroti, Serere, Kumi, and Katine. Additionally, he wants to establish a cassava starch factory to create jobs and improve farmers' livelihoods.
Turning to youth empowerment, Mafabi suggested subsidizing motorcycle prices for boda boda riders, making transportation more accessible. He also pledged to tackle corruption, a critical issue in the region, and ensure transparency in public funds management.
Education and health were not left behind. Mafabi promised higher teacher salaries and better school infrastructure, as well as an upgrade for Soroti Regional Referral Hospital to a National Hospital with improved facilities and staff pay.
The massive turnout at the rally, according to Soroti City Woman MP Joan Alobo Acom, signifies a renewed hope in the opposition. The people of Teso are ready for change, she declared.
A challenging journey lies ahead: Mafabi is set to continue his campaign across Soroti District, engaging with local leaders and addressing more rallies.
